Restored to the most exacting standards - Elegant Bovey Castle
Originally built as a private home and sporting estate the Castle exudes the elegance, luxury and excitement of the 1920's. Enhanced by exceptional levels of comfort and friendly service, sets this experience apart from any other; a touch of Agatha Christie, the Orient Express and Hercule Poirot!
Bovey Castle was built in 1906 under the ownership of Viscount Hambledon, son of the business baron WH Smith who was also First Sea Lord of the Admiralty. As is evidenced today, no expense was spared in either the scale or the quality of craftsmanship, creating an exceptional country home with grand oak panelled drawing rooms, large open fire-places, ornate broad stairways and magnificent oak panelled Great Hall, all opening onto the stone balustraded garden terraces.
The vast Estate, parklands, formal gardens and rivers have undergone extensive restoration in keeping with the style of traditional gardens of the turn of the Century. The extensive Borders and herbaceous gardens now replanted with traditional Victorian specimens will provide the nature lover and gardener alike with fine vistas all year round colour.
Throughout the Estate, ornamental garden furniture, follies and pavilions have been carefully restored and thatchwork roofs reinstalled.
The Estate also owns 25 miles of fishing for salmon and trout as well as stocked trout lakes a short walk from the Lodges. Fly-fishing tuition is available daily.
Guest also enjoy a daily falconry display and for lovers of this sport of kings, regular moorland hunts on foot or on horseback.
In addition, there are daily activities such as archery, target shooting and horse riding. Children can join the Bovey Rangers Club which is fully supervised and for children four years and over. There they learn new skills and sports around the Estate. There is also a fully equipped children's play-barn.
In the newly built state of the art Spa at Bovey Castle, guests can enjoy a wide range of specialist treatments as well as stunning indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, steam and a fully equipped gymnasium.
The Castle has an extensive and interesting wine cellar with stunning vintages along-side delicious and newly found New World wines. A daily wine tasting allows guests to taste the sommeliers daily choice of Club wines.
Lunch is served in the Clubhouse and dinner in the exquisite, Palm Court Dining Room. Lodge guests may also arrange for supplies to be delivered by the Concierge service if they wish to dine in the privacy of their lodge.
The lodges are available for long-rentals by special arrangements with the Estate. A minimum stay of three nights is required. For shorter stays, sixty-five guestrooms, staterooms and suites are available in the Castle.
